First World Congress of Computational Neurosurgery
The World Congress of Computational Neurosurgery (WCCNS) is the first international congress dedicated to the emerging field of computational neurosurgery, convening clinicians, computer scientists, and researchers to define its future. Hosted in Sydney, the inaugural congress brought together the global community and served as the setting for the ratification of the Declaration of Sydney, the field's first framework for the ethical use of artificial intelligence in neurosurgery.

The Declaration of Sydney: a global framework for AI ethics in neurosurgery
The CNS Lab led the drafting and ratification of the Declaration of Sydney which is a 15-article international consensus framework for the ethical and responsible use of AI in neurosurgery. The Declaration was pledged at the inaugural World Congress of Computational Neurosurgery (WCCNS), hosted in Sydney in February 2026.

Call for Papers: Computational Neurosurgery Special Issue
The lab is guest-editing a special issue on Computational Neurosurgery for the Journal of Neuro-Oncology Discovery and invites submissions from researchers working at the intersection of computational science, artificial intelligence, and neurosurgery. Contributions on imaging, modelling, surgical planning, and neuro-ethics are welcome.

This Research Topic will focus on applications of the achievements of fractal physiology in the diagnosis of pathologies of the brain and retina and new therapeutic strategies. Prof Antonio Di Ieva named 2026 Eccles Lecturer
Prof Antonio Di Ieva has been named the 2026 Eccles Lecturer, one of the highest honours in the neurosciences, awarded jointly by the Australasian Neuroscience Society and the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia in tribute to Nobel Laureate Sir John Eccles. His lecture, "Brain Patterns: In Search of the Holy Grail of Neuroscience," will be delivered at the NSA Annual Conference in Adelaide and at NeuroAlliance 2026 in Sydney.

Brain Tumour Awareness Month 2020: Prof Antonio Di Ieva
Speaking to Specialised Therapeutics to mark Brain Tumour Awareness Month, the accomplished neurosurgeon, who has performed more than 2000 brain surgeries in the past 15 years, also expects that while the diagnosis of brain cancer appears to be increasing, neurosurgeons will be doing less brain surgery in the next few decades, as personalised therapies move to the forefront of brain cancer treatment.

This session presents a translational computational pipeline for surgical neuro-oncology, spanning the entire patient pathway, from preoperative imaging assessment and data-driven modelling to intraoperative guidance technologies.Through illustrative cases of glioma surgery, we demonstrate the combined use of AI-based imaging tools, fluorescence-guided visualization with GLOW400, connectomics analysis, and real-time intraoperative technologies can optimize the onco-functional balance.
