Opportunities

Get Involved

The CNS Lab occasionally has openings for researchers, students, and collaborators whose interests align closely with our work in computational neurosurgery. Availability varies with current projects and funding.

What working here looks like

We work at the intersection of neurosurgery, artificial intelligence, and advanced imaging. You will collaborate with clinicians, engineers, and mathematicians on problems that matter, using computational tools to advance patient care and scientific understanding.

Job opportunities

Positions are advertised here as they become available.

PLEASE ONLY SUBMIT ENQUIRIES OR APPLICATIONS WHEN A POSITION IS CURRENTLY ADVERTISED HERE.

Please, note: Eligibility for the Computional Neurosurgery Fellowship is limited to neurosurgeons, whether currently in training or practising as consultants.

Computational Neurosurgery Fellowship

Supported by B Braun, Abbott, and Macquarie Neurosurgery & Spine

This fellowship is currently filled until 2028. Applications for the next term will be considered closer to 2028.

Postdoctoral

Postdoctoral and fellowship opportunities

When avaialble, open positions for researchers with expertise in medical imaging, computational methods, or neurosurgery will be posted here!

Graduate Research Applications

The CNS Lab welcomes applications from motivated MRes and PhD candidates who wish to work at the frontier of computational neurosurgery, brain imaging, and artificial intelligence. We offer a stimulating, multidisciplinary environment and strong mentorship. Funding support may be available through the Macquarie University Graduate Research Academy scholarships, including the Research Training Program (RTP) stipend and fee-offset scholarships. We encourage you to explore available funding avenues before reaching out.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the

Master of Research (MRes)

must hold an undergraduate degree with at least second-class honours (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as biomedical engineering, neuroscience, physics, mathematics, or computer science.

Applicants for the

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

must hold a research Master's degree or an Honours degree with first-class standing, along with demonstrated experience in quantitative research methods and a strong publication or project record.

Express Your Interest

Due to the highly competitive nature of international scholarships and the large number of expressions of interest we receive, we are only able to support a limited number of applications. Before contacting us, please ensure you meet the Macquarie University admission requirements, the scholarship eligibility criteria, and the following minimum criteria for our research group:

PhD applicants: GPAof 6.5 or above, a Master's thesis mark of at least 92% with excellent examiner reports, and at least one first-author paper published in a high-quality,internationally recognised journal.

MRes applicants:GPA of 6.5 or above and at least one first-author paper.

If you believe you meet these requirements, please email the following documents to cnslab@mq.edu.au ONLY for an initial assessment:

Your CV, including a complete list ofpublications (where applicable). For each journal publication, please include the journal's quartile ranking and Impact Factor.

Academic transcript(s) for your most recent degree, showing your GPA.

Your Master'sthesis (or equivalent research thesis) if you are applying for PhD admission.

A brief statement outlining your research interests and explaining why you would like to join our research group.

Please note that submitting these documents does not constitute a formal application for admission or a scholarship. They are used by us solely for an initial assessment of whether your academic background, research experience, and research interests align with our research program, and whether we would be able to support your application as prospective supervisors should you be successful in securing ascholarship.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We receive a high volume of enquiries and will contact shortlisted candidates only. Please allow up to four weeks for a response.

Volunteer with the lab

We occasionally offer unpaid volunteer positions for students or early-career researchers who wish to gain hands-on experience in computational neurosurgery research. Volunteers contribute to defined project tasks under supervision of lab members.

Please be aware that in-person attendance at our Macquarie University campus is compulsory for all volunteer roles, and remote-only arrangements are not available. Additionally, the lab does not provide funding, stipends, transport allowances, or any other form of financial support  to volunteers.

Visiting scholars

Established researchers and senior PhD candidates from other institutions are welcome to visit the CNS Lab for collaborative stays. Visiting arrangements are typically one to six months and are designed to advance shared research goals.

The lab does not fund visiting scholars. Visitors must be self-funded and hold their own salary or stipend from their home institution, grant, or other source. The CNS Lab cannot provide or arrange visa sponsorship, accommodation, travel support, or any other financial contribution.
